(Dagbladet): 15 years after Palme d’Or-nominated “unfaithful” has Liv Ullmann total international film stars like Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell, and returned to the director’s chair with “Miss Julie.”
After the premiere of the film festival in Toronto this weekend are critics, however subdued.
Clumsy
“It is disappointing to have to report that despite the nuanced work of a luminous Jessica Chastain and a cascading Colin Farrell, Liv Ullmann film one clumsy and stiff affair that lacks relevance and only occasionally seems powerful, “writes The Hollywood Reporter.
” There is much to marvel at the acting. But it turns out that one can only admire, rather than becoming emotionally involved, “writes Variety.
” Heavy strains disappointment from a general claustrophobia that feels like it suffocates any freedom, and literally breaks through the medium of film to beat us to obey. This creates a rather uncomfortable experience, and it is far from surprising that many left the view along the way. The audience most like to be entertained, but it’s not something this film are doing, “writes Indie Wire, which admittedly also has much to say about the film and points out that the film be judged severely because the expectations are so high.
Conflicts
“Miss Julie,” which will premiere in Norway this weekend, is an adaptation of August Strindberg’s play from 1888 play about an upper-class woman who seduces his servant, and has been filmed several times before.
Variety reviewer believes it particularly comes up short against the Swedish award-winning 1951 film adaptation of Alf Sjöberg, and that it had done better as a theater production or television film.
Although Ullmann has been open about the genesis was far from smooth. The magazine Rushprint she talked about conflicts with both the photographer with Chastain, who should have reacted to how the director constantly insisted on standing next to the camera and see the actors in the face, rather than to follow the monitor.
Ullmann has also said that she particularly enjoyed having to deal with a set of producers in other countries. Miss Julie is a collaboration between Norwegian, French and British manufacturers.
Delicate Hamer
Other Norwegian films that has been shown in Toronto this weekend, got better reception. Director Morten Tyldum Hollywood production “The Imitation Game” is praised by many and has long been touted as Oscar favorite.
Bent Hamer’s “1001 grams”, Ane Dahl Torp in the lead role and this year’s Norwegian candidate for the Oscar award for best foreign-language film, is an “extremely light and delicate art film that barely make mistakes a single place,” according to THR.
Also Ole Giaever “Against nature” was shown at the prestigious festival, which rounded off Sunday . Toronto Festival will not share jury awards, but hold a popular referendum resulting in the so-called People’s Choice Award.
