For the second time in a short time we were able to see the Northern Lights dancing across Sarpsborg.

The Northern Lights were visible over southern Norway, which is not common because there is often only visible further north.

Senior Advisor Pål Brekke Norwegian Space Centre explanation for why we could see the green light yesterday.

– The sørlandet could behold a great aurora in the night. This is a large open area in the Sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona. Such openings called corona holes, he informs in an email to SA.

Powerful solar winds

Such holes enables powerful solar winds lighter emits from Solas atmosphere, which sends more particles in the direction earth.

– Based on such corona holes spurts solar winds out with twice as high as the rest of the Solar disc. When such hole rotates toward the center of the sun, so they are aiming straight at us, and a few days hit Earth this vindgustet explains Brekke.

That is when we see the Northern Lights race across the sky.

pushed southward

It is only under additional powerful eruptions that one can see the Northern Lights on our latitude.

– The solar wind is Earth’s magnetic field to vibrate. Then it creates a geomagnetic storm, which reflects a extra powerful aurora. Powerful geomagnetic storms pushes Northern Lights farther south, so that we can experience it here in southern Norway, says Brekke.

Can be aurora also in the night

Brekke also believe that it can be good opportunities to see new aurora in the night.

– If there is clear weather there are opportunities, but there are several factors that come into play, so it is difficult to warrant something, he said.

Here you can see warning about it being aurora in the coming days (External link). If you are located north of the green line chances are good.
