Debuting with the best Nordic children – Jarlsberg

Håkon Øvreås could have achieved victory in Stockholm on Wednesday night. With its debutbok “Brown” won the children’s book author of 12 other books from Scandinavia.

– The feeling is a mix of surreal and very fun. A great achievement, says Øvreås, who grew up in Sundbyfoss and also lives there now. In fact constitute streets and residential areas in Sundbyfoss backdrop for the action in the book, he says, of course with some creative adjustments.

The price is worth DKK 350,000. The jury states the “As children fill” Brown “a gap between books for the smallest and books for young people. It is a story with classic qualities, which also helps to renew tale for children, Norwegian and Nordic tradition “.

The story only came

Øvreås has previously published poetry collections “The distance between houses” and “Badger Variations”.

– Why they were children? It was a story that came simply. I would write about a boy who says “everything is fine”, although he experiences much trouble. He does things secretly in the night, telling Øvreås.

“Brown” is illustrated by Øyvind Torseter and was released last year. That it was going to be a big success, had Øvreås never imagined.

– No, I was glad when it was assumed in the publishing house. Then I was happy. He took it off completely, he said.

The book was quickly nominated for the Brage Prize and won the Ministry of Culture Literature and also received Norwegian Ministry of Children and Ungdomsbokforfatteres debutant award “The Magic Chalk”.

Great importance

And now therefore this award from the Nordic Council, in competition with one another Gro Dahle and Kaia Dahle Nyhus from Tjøme. Price means a lot in many ways for Øvreås’ authorship.

– This means enough money that I can concentrate more on writing. And it has great psychological significance. You get a completely different kind of attention, and a door out to other countries, says Øvreås, who reveals that he has already received some new offers.

The daily work hofsokningen as editor in Bokvennen publishers, but he dreams of being able to work as a full-time author. The next book out will be the sequel “Svartle”.

– The script is almost finished, and I expect that it comes out next fall, says Øvreås.
