“The King no” was Thursday not surprisingly elected Norwegian contender in the race to be the best non-English language film at the Oscars. The film first premiered at Norwegian cinemas on September 23, but has already received very much attention.
– That it has been chosen as Norwegian Oscar candidate, is a fantastic start for the film, says a very happy Poppe .

– There is a strong, even more gripping story than we thought when we started working on it, says Poppe.

Long way forward
Director Erik Poppe has been behind a Norwegian Oscar candidate once before. In 2005, his film “Hawaii, Oslo” Norwegian candidate, but fell early out of the race.
– I made some experiences that time that I can take advantage of now. In the coming months I’m going to spend much time in the United States to display the movie for them to nominate it. The road is long to the final list of five movies that eventually will compete for the coveted award. It will takes several rounds before the five finalists will be published on 24 January next year. The Oscars will be held on Sunday 26 February.
Last year, 81 films were enrolled in the category of best non-English language film before the selection process began.
Large volunteer efforts
As justification for choosing “the King no” draws the Norwegian Oscar Committee presented the film is a strong and universal story about taking the right decisions under extreme conditions.
– “the King’s no” is a film that tells of a dramatic event relating to us as a nation, but that examines the history that affected large parts of the world. With its engaging themes and strong cinematic qualities I have great faith in the film as our candidate in the Oscar race, says committee chairman Sindre Guldvog.
Erik Poppe believes “Kongens no” is “the entire Norwegian film.”
– I do not think we have a similar example of a film that the degrees have obtained a local foundation and with such voluntary work wherever we’ve been filming. I made a choice very early on that the story will be filmed in the places where it happened. So we’ve traveled around, and children and grandchildren have played their grandparents, and in a poignant and credible manner. There are many thousands of people who have lined up for this movie, says Poppe.
September 23 there will be festive premiere in Oslo and outdoor premiere in the Courtyard at Oscarsborg Fortress, where parts of the film were recorded. Poppe says it also will be closed premiere in Elverum, Hamar and Trysil for those who have been involved in making the film.
