Triers success has a bitter aftertaste – Aftenposten

Main Competition in Cannes is the grandest goal for aspiring filmmakers. Joachim Trier has refused countless offers for either making the film he had visions. The French withdrawal is the first and best sign that he has succeeded.

For movie nation Norway is this adornment. No Norwegian films have been in the main competition since legacy by Anja Breien in 1979. Trolösa of Liv Ullmann attended in 2000, but it was a Swedish production. Arne Skouen had three films in the main competition in the period 1952 to 1958.

Louder Than Bombs is the main competition in 1960 which forms the important backdrop. Then participated Triers grandfather Erik Løchen with the wave-inspired triangle drama Quest .

Trang birth

Still coming this outlet with a bitter aftertaste.

Louder Than Bombs has had a particularly difficult birth, partly by bureaucratic reasons.

In fact, the entire production stopped at a time when everything was ready for shooting in the United States.

Bustling, international actors did not done the job, the filmmakers had to return to Norway. Since the film is an international production, refused Norwegian Film Institute (NFI) to recognize it as a Norwegian film made for the Norwegian market. Thus stopped financing up. Production stood deadlocked for a whole year before the film institute turned.

There is also a paradox that our biggest directing talent at the age of 41 years has only made three films. Already debut film Reprise (2006) was invited to film festivals around the world. Oslo, August 31st (2011) were taken out to the side program Un Certain Regard at Cannes. Just the movie was actually made in a raptus and low budget.

Both Reprise and Oslo, August 31st has had regular cinema distribution in a long number of countries. Oslo, August 31st were seen by almost 200,000 in France. After this film got Trier called package funding from NFI, ie a security for the production of two new films. Then it is discouraging that it should sit as far inside to realize Louder Than Bombs .

Heavy Rodd

But it is typical Norwegian. It is particularly low threshold for debutantes in Norwegian film, while talents stock very little film.

The width has been at the expense of deepening and sharpening.

Neither Danish filmmakers are satisfied with conditions at home, but both Thomas Vinterberg and Lars von Trier has after all extensive filmography. Not that high production pace is a goal in itself. But when the low pace due obstacles and dilatoriness in the system, so it is hard to be visionary filmmaker.

It begins to resemble something when Morten Tyldum wins Oscar and Joachim Trier will compete in Cannes. That is not the direction of the Norwegian film policy. How it is staked out, it will only be harder to get support for intensive and personal projects in the future.
