- All who believe in democracy should thank Snowden – NRK

The American is in Oslo in connection with Norway premiere of “Citizen Four” in February won the Oscar for best documentary.

Filmmaker Laura Poitras followed Edward Snowden when he two years ago leaked large amounts of secret information about American surveillance of domestic and international telecommunications and data traffic.

– The film humanizes days when Snowden decided to leak these documents. It shows how risk he exposed himself and how difficult decision it was to take, says Toomey.

Patrick Tooney is part of Snow Its forvsarsapparat and works daily American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a charitable organization that works to preserve Americans civil rights.

Snowden is wanted internationally and indicted in the US for espionage and theft of state property. As an employee of the intelligence organization NSA and a private contractor had Snowden access to large amounts top secret documents. He leaked thousands of them journalists, who could then documenting global mass surveillance.

ACLU is one of the organizations that work to get the indictment of Snowden waived.

– Espionage Act prohibits entering hemmeligstemplet information, but it does not distinguish between selling this information to other nations and to provide information to the public.

Despite inquiries, feel Tooney that Snowden deserve more recognition from the international community.

– All who believe in democracy should thank Snowden. The revelations have led to reform efforts in the United States, investigations elsewhere and pressure on governments to change monitoring their routines, the lawyer said.



Assists Wikipedia

ACLU works with multiple lawsuits against National Security Agency (NSA) is the intelligence agency that operates surveillance that Snowden leaked information.

The organization assists including online encyclopedia Wikipedia as plaintiff NSA because of what they believe is illegal surveillance of internet. Patrick Toomey have faith that the American judiciary will eventually limit monitoring.

– The Government believe that they can monitor Americans communication with foreign countries without taking into account people’s right to privacy. We believe both amerikanske- and foreign citizens have the right to privacy and that this surveillance is illegal.

– We have strong belief that the judiciary would call NSA surveillance illegal.
