Bergkastet comes from the position as director of the university College in Lillehammer. He has previously been kinodirektør in Oslo, director of the national theatre and at the Rogaland Theatre. Currently he sits on the board of directors of the NRK and Sparebankstiftelsen DNB.

– The Norwegian Opera & Ballet is among the country’s most interesting businesses. The opera houses the collective arts, and I have applied for the job because I like to join forces. In addition, I have wanted me back to the cultural scene, ” says Bergkastet.

Controversy ledermodell

With the position inherits the Bergkastet several challenges. The opera house has in recent years struggled with a large pensjonsutgifter, deficit and lederkonflikter.

the Managing director is the Opera’s chief executive. Under him there are six equal leaders: Ballettsjef, nmf music director, operasjef, technical director, director of communications and administration and chief financial officer.

Ledermodellen has been controversial, including in the international operamiljøet. In november, sent the members of the Deutsche Opernkonferenz an open letter to the chairman of the board, Anne Carine Interconnection where they saw with great concern of the World government government.

There have been several replacements in the operaledelsen the last few years. In the spring of 2015 got Per Boye Hansen informed that his fixed term as operasjef not being extended when it runs out in the fall of 2017.

In retrospect, it became known through the newspaper Aftenposten that it was the leadership that could kill Boye Hansen. He has had major problems, especially with the artistic staff at the Opera house. In December of last year was Annilese Miskimmon employed as Boye Hansen’s successor from 1. august 2017

Hope to contribute to the good teamwork

the Interconnection says to Aftenposten that it was not appropriate to change the ledermodellen in connection with the hiring of a new chief executive officer.

” We have said to Geir Bergkastet that one of his main tasks will be to get this big house to pull together well. The most important thing is that it is created good art on the scenes, ” says the Interconnection.

Bergkastet he says through the press has been that there have been conflicts at the Opera.

I signed the employment contract on Tuesday morning and looking forward to starting with a blank sheet of paper. So far, I have not studied very carefully what is in front of me. The idea is that I’ll try to contribute with my experiences from performing arts, theatre and management through the many years. I hope to contribute to a good interaction between all fagfunksjoner and effort here at the house, ” says Bergkastet.

Deficit and large pensjonsutgifter

In 2015 had the Opera pensjonsutgifter on the 175 million of revenue of 740 million. The reason for the high the pension expences is that the dancers get off when they are 41 years old, sangsolister when they are 52 and choristers when they are 56 years old. Thus, the vesting period and short payout time long.

Henrik Engelsviken, who is currently speaking on behalf of the employees at the Opera, highlights the economic challenges and pensjonssaken as the biggest challenges for the new director.

– We soloists, backing singers and dancers sits and bites nails when it comes to our pension. We hope that the new director, like the old, will be a good ally in influencing the Ministry of culture to produce something everyone can live with, to the best of the opera and the employees, ” says Engelsviken.

In anticipation of something more concrete, the staff at the Opera house today covered by a temporary defined contribution plan. From the ministry get the newspaper Aftenposten stated they aim to put forward a consultation paper on operapensjonsloven the first half of 2017. This was initially expected before the new year.

the Interconnection says the Opera’s financial challenges are a significant part of the Bergkastets job.

He has worked against the ministry earlier, the board is engaged in. When a new operapensjonsordning is in place, the look of things immediately completely anneredes out. Something that does not come up so often, is that the daily operations of the Opera house is very good, ” says the Interconnection.
