Removes controversial film from the program – NRK

An American billionaire named Bill Browder has previously stopped impressions of the movie “The Magnitsky Act”, and now the view also stopped at the short film festival in Grimstad.

– To not show the documentary has been a very difficult decision and short film festival continues to support Piraya film and Nekrasov his desire to finish this film project, writing festival on their websites.

The controversial film “The Magnitsky Act” (see fact box at the bottom of the case), made by Andrej Nekrasov, should have its Norwegian premiere in Grimstad on Friday.

The festival received notice of any action by William Browder, the widow of Magnitsky and his mother if the festival will screen the film, when they claim that the film is defamatory of Browder and Magnitsky.

the festival writes that the cancellation of the premiere due to several factors including that other European broadcasters have postponed screening.

If the film festival in Grimstad had been the first to see “the Magnitsky Act” would it ran the festival significantly increased legal liability.

– the festival will not have the means to cope with a trial of such dimensions, and would at worst have to be closed down. Only legal costs alone would be impossible to deal with, writing festival in the press release.

– As a producer I am very sad. Documenta’s director, Andrei Nekrasov, previously gagged and persecuted for his Putin-critical films. I have been proud to give him a home here in town so he can continue to make their critical documentaries under Norwegian protection. Today I am less proud. It is a sad day for freedom of expression, says Torstein Grude of Piraya Film, which tells us that they have been in regular contact with the film festival.

The producer says he understands that Short Film Festival in Grimstad must think economics. He wished others came on the pitch to help the festival financially.

Film company in June prosecuted the Norwegian Helsinki Committee for receiving stolen goods, infringement of trade secret and unauthorized dealings with access data, they write on their Facebook page.

They also reviewed Bill Browder, among other violation of trade secrets, grand larceny and rough extortion.

Piraya film believes that both Browder and NHC has gained access to an unfinished version of ” The Magnitsky Act “. NHC has responded, including Dagbladet that they legally have received a link with an unfinished version of the film.

Why “The Magnitsky Act” controversial

  • the film is about the Russian tax lawyer Sergei Magnitskij, representing the American investor Bill Browder.
  • Magnitskij notified of a massive embezzlement of tax money, carried out by the same Russian police who later arrested him. In 2009 died Magnitskij in a prison in Moscow.
  • Bill Browder, CEO of the largest foreign investor company in Russia until 2005, has since 2009 led a global campaign to expose corruption and abuse of human rights.
  • as a consequence of this, “Sergei Magnitsky Rule of law Accountability Act” was introduced in the US in 2012. It is a US law that allows for sanctions against foreign citizens for their human rights violations, and Browder working on getting law approved in Europe.
  • in the years after Magnitskijs death, it has been argued, among other things, “the movement for justice for Magnitsky”, headed by investor Browder, the lawyer died as a result of torture and abuse.
  • the controversies among other things, a theory that it was Browder himself was behind tax evasions, which eventually got Magnitskij killed. This rejects Browder strongly.
