Our monument in life disappeared suddenly and unexpectedly from us, but we must take care of each other and will keep the memories, values and stories about him and missing friends alive. One can die twice – when traveling to the other side, but also if one stops talking and remind them who is gone.

Although knew Jarle at this point nothing about comrades was missing.

– He and Samuel had had to seek shelter and dig into the storm, says the mother of VG.

When Jarle came into the world in 1977 marked the mother from the first hour that here came a guy with guts and determination.

– Children shows very early what kind of properties they have. Jarle has constantly shown that he is seeking something more, and that borders do not limit the possibilities in life.

This strong will would come in handy in adolescence Jarle who received an international childhood. Just six weeks old, the family moved to Abidjan in Ivory Coast where his father, Odd Egil Andhøy, worked for the Foreign Ministry. After some years back in Oslo family moved to Geneva when Jarle was four years. There went Jarle international school. In the pleasant little class got Jarle develop their creative abilities and won often competitions, such as could be about to make the best snowman.

It was a brutal transition to Norwegian school day at Bestum school nine year old Jarle.

– It was hard to get into the group of friends that had been established from the others went in 1st class. Jarle had to constantly fight to get into. He was also bullied because he had the right brand clothes.

First in middle school, when Jarle changed schools, there was a change. The pattern was broken. And Jarle got their good friends. When could well mom Kari finally breathe a sigh of relief?

– I could not breathe out, because then came adolescence and the rebellious Jarle, she states.

Was with Granny

One memory has drilled stuck: the morning when he was at school. He would not show up – and she struggled to get aroused him. Jarle did not fit into the Norwegian school system and bored. Mothers methods to awaken her son was a bucket of cold water to get him to school.

When Jarle was 17 and soon finished the second year of high school his father «Gille» a new position at the Norwegian Embassy in Vienna . Meanwhile died Jarles grandfather in Larvik. Grandmother was widowed. Jarle decided that he will remain in Norway with her.

– I knew it was a good solution. For me as a mother who had had a hectic adolescence with Jarle, but also because I was an only child who even then could travel from my mother and knowing she was well taken care of Jarle. He moved in with her and helped her with practical things while she cooked food and took care of Jarle which began at Thor Heyerdahl Upper Secondary School.

There were mostly idyll with grandmother at the navigating bridge out on the terrace where she served waffles. Jarle that out in the garden at the most had three boats which he refurbished among apple trees and rose bushes her. It was Grandma who baptized Jarles first sail “Berserk”.

It was during these adolescence with Granny, Robert PCP, one of the three that are currently missing after shipwreck with “Berserk III” for almost four years ago, started going at Grandma home and garden.

Robert came into port with a buffing machine and asked, “When can I patterns on and when can we go?” Here began planning Jarles first mission at sea. One of them would be so fatally.

For 16 years later, three of Andhøy crew missing in the Southern Ocean. From having been a salty adventurer, a media favorite, turned many against Jarle Andhøy. He was perceived as irresponsible. No one knew how wrong his immediate thought perception of Jarle was, but for the sake of tragedy chose his mother to keep it for themselves.

– I commented this not for the sake of the other relatives who sat with the greatest loss some may have, and it would be completely wrong to interfere with their grief with my opinions, says Kari Andhøy why she kept silent.

But the joy that Jarle was alive, she must live with a heavy should:

– As the situation was, I could not rejoice that Jarle was alive, when we realized that the other was missing. I got to keep my son, but felt a great emptiness. For what the parents of the other three? It was totally unreal, one state of shock.

The crew had been split in one boat crews and one landlag. Robert PCP, Tom Gisle Bellika and South Africans Leonard J. Banks was left on board. They were lying by Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton winter quarters in Horse Shoe Bay. There they would establish a base in case they had to overwinter.

Series on TVNorge

One year after the shipwreck traveled Andhøy back to Antarctica. Now journey television series. January 8 starts series on TVNorge. In the series “The search for Berserk” will Andhøy honor comrades who died, view the expedition side of events and search for answers to what really happened the fateful day in February 2011.

Kari Andhøy parts son viewpoint need to sail back to Antarctica.

– After last race I felt that the respectful accident questions drowned around Jarle. Government and police focused primarily on illegal sailing or anchoring in a protection zone in Antarctica. Why would not ask what happened with three dead men? she asks, and elaborates:

– After extensive contact and clear illegality focus towards expedition is worth asking themselves – why acted three experienced sailors contrary to an established expedition deal, leaving a safe haven to sail straight into in an announced storm? And there in the worlds most extreme waters. Tom Gisle Bellika, Robert PCP and Leonard James Banks deserve to be heard and get the questions posed. When Norwegian and New Zealand authorities choose to remain silent about the real conditions had not Jarle no choice.

– He had to travel back as long as there was a little hope that his friends could be alive, says Kari Andhøy.
