Movie Review: An extraordinary experience! – VG

Boyhood is a groundbreaking film about adolescence.

It is actually made over 12 years, and followed the young actors ellar Coltrane and Lorelei Linklater – siblings in the film – from the age of eight to 20 same time span applies of course to all the other actors.

A particularly patient record grip, you understand; which in turn gives an authenticity and a personal presence that no other childhood movies I’ve ever seen.

ellar Coltrane is the central figure here, it’s his upbringing it’s about. And the director must simply have had råflaks who relied on him as a child; as an adult he becomes more and more interesting!

When we meet him as a child, he lives with a hard fighting mother and his sister eglete. The risk also appears, after many years of absence in Alaska.

Over barely three hours then rolled the whole growing up, with the astute and protective mother – which tends to make wrong choices, particularly in relation to men. And therefore, the two siblings constantly deal with new friends in new schools and new challenges as life opens up more and more.

GROW UP: ellar Coltrane as eight-year-old and 20-year-old in very fascinating, “Boyhood”.

It’s actually quite mesmerizing! At the same time the film has a rather unorthodox structure: To make the story as realistic as possible, there is little artificial drama, everything should be in the young boy’s “eye level.”

To cut together this film must have been a enjoyable nightmare; so much to choose from, so many trends to follow, so infinitely interesting to discard. What’s interesting is that the director Linklater manages to get an impressive visual result; nothing of what unfolds on canvas works other than as a completely modern film. Although he therefore have not had to be other than faithful to the period details just as he has taken footage – and be alert in relation to which youth phenomena that remain as typical period.

As pure movie experience hands well here and where the shifts and developments are somewhat choppy and unmusical; otherwise would be impossible.

But the phenomenon on film is “Boyhood” an incomparable experience!

PS : Oslo Kino still arguing with distributor UIP on movie rentals, so no OK cinemas showing the film. In Oslo it appears therefore at the Cinematheque.
