- Unmusical reduce opera to a private party room – NRK

– I have great sympathy for the Opera looking for ways to make money, but I do not think that opera should be a party room for the most wealthy of us, says Hilde Sandvik, former longstanding cultural and debate editor Bergens Tidende and now chief editor of culture website Broen.xyz.

– the Opera is our everyone’s common house, and to reduce it to become a private banquet facilities, sounds unmusical in my ears, says Sandvik .

“Significant amounts”

The Saturday closed the Norwegian Opera & amp; Ballet in Bjørvika in Oslo both doors and the roofscape of tourists and other visitors. The reason was that the opera house for the first time was rented to private wedding reception.

– The Opera is in a tight financial situation and also need money beyond ticket sales, and when we chose to say yes this time. We thought twice about, and will now evaluate this, says Kenneth Fredstie, marketing and communications director at the Norwegian Opera & amp; Ballet.

Fredstie will not say how much it cost to rent the entire building in one day.

– I can not comment on contractual relationships, but the amount was significant. It channeled into our daily operations and art production, he said.

– Gives poor signals

Culture Commentator Agnes Moxnes NRK let even notice the spectacular fireworks Saturday night adorned Oslo sky in honor of the bride and groom at the Opera.

– I can understand that Opera uses an emergency like this in terms of the economy, but it is not ideal, it gives some bad signals. It signals that the Opera, our cultural venue, is for sale if only the sum of money is high enough, says Moxnes.

The Opera is the largest cultural institution, measured by budget and number of employees. They receive over half a billion in government support and is becoming a very popular tourist attraction in the capital since opening in 2008.

The economic situation is less light. Operating profit plunges – accounts for 2015 show a sharp fall to 67 million in losses.

– The struggling violently with the pension’s and have to solve it. I do not think they can wait to get much greater support from the government, says Moxnes.

Sandvik believes opera should drop the rental as a very expensive, private banquet facilities and rather look to the ambassador schemes several art museums have.

– Der ties a much greater extent private donations directly to art production. One can enter directly and support, often against that also get some benefits. In this case, with the Opera House, it sounds like money for wedding event will go to the overall operation.
