Movie review: “The allvarsamma toy” – VG

Virtuous costume drama from the other old Stockholm (for the occasion is placed to Budapest).

DRAMA

“The allvarsamma toy”

Sweden. From the age of 6. Director: Pernilla August.

By: Sverrir Gundnason, Karin Franz Körlof, Michael Nyqvist, Sven Nordin.

Arvid (Gudnason) and Lydia (Franz Körlof) meet in the stockholmske the archipelago in 1901. They are immediately attrahert to each other, but it is not the two. Fattiggutten Arvid, ukledelig message, feel that he does not have anything to offer her.

the Years go by. Lydias kunstnerfar door, Arvid being promoted from reviewer to teateranmelder in the newspaper he is working in. He married Dagmar (Liv Mjönes): Whole by from one end to the other. Lydia needs money and enters into a loveless marriage with the velbeslåtte Roslin (Nordin). They get a daughter.

“You don’t get the one you choose”, breathe Arvids wise editor Markel (Nyqvist) resigned at a time. But, of course, the two unhappy lovers meet again a good few years later (the whimsical is that they look just as young!). It goes as it must go, and it has dramatic consequences.

Hjalmar Södergrens tragic romanromanse from 1912 has been into a wolf before (in Sweden in 1945 and of Anja Breien in 1977), and is a sort of Swedish equivalent of Knut Hamsun’s “Victoria” (1898). It’s about young love versus old money, the passion in the revolution time, a point that hamres into by the bolsheviks in round glasses who march in the streets.

August has chosen to film in 4:3, i.e. the old “letterbox”format, á la other old CHANNELS. It is mysterious, all the time there is something with the story, or the visuals, which can be said to win on it.

But worse is it that the chemistry between the two attractive young lovers only “sådär”. Yes, we realize that the lust and passion so different in the 1910′s: It had to stagges, hidden, at any time. But we need to be able to believe that love was just as deep. This is tame, even to the virtuous costume drama to be.

the Film lights up when Nyqvist and Mjönes is on canvas, and it’s exciting to see Stockholm in 1910-tallsskrud – knowing that eksteriørene is filmed in Budapest in 2015.

But it feels long(as): A quarter of the playing time consists apparently of knowing glances. Glance at each other, glance out of the window, glance to communicate sjelfullhet, and that makes it, but that in total is too many.

It is a nice melodrama, and it is not a waste of time to see it. But significantly can this movie not be said to be.
