Palme d’Or at Cannes this year went to the socially critical drama “Dheepan”, directed by Jacques Audiard French. Norwegian Joachim Trier got no prices.
The film is about Tamil refugees from separatist Tamil Tigers, who are trying to start a new life in France.
Norwegian Joachim Trier’s film “Louder Than Bombs” is the first norskregisserte film for 36 years who participated in the French film festival’s prestigious main competition.
It was beforehand no clear favorites for the world grandest film festival trophy, the Palme d’Or.
The Hungarian director Laszlo Nemes won the “second prize” The big jury award, for the murky holocaust drama “Son of Saul.” Jury third prize got Greek Yorgos Lanthimos’ film “The Lobster”.
Surprised choice
Aftenposten film reviewer Kjetil Lismoen did not expect that “Dheepan” would go all the way.
I was surprised, says Lismoen.
He had expected that “Son of Saoul” which won the Grand Prix, or “The Assasin”, which won the Jury Prize, was to win the Palme d’Or.
– This is not one of the best films Jacques Audiard has directed, in this sense it is a little surprising, says Lismoen, who has seen the movie.
– Why do you think it won?
It’s hard to say. There may be a compromise in the Jury. There is a strong history and a strong film. But some, including me, think the end is a little weak. The whole is not quite optimal. He has made much stronger films than this. Sometimes it happens that people who have delivered strong films without getting Palme d’Or, get the Palme later for a slightly weaker film. It is a little regrettable, he said.
Had expected a price of Trier
Lismoen also believes it is expected that the Norwegian “Louder Than Bombs” not won the Palme.
– I was not very surprised that it was not expected that it would get some heavy prices. But the kune been an actor price, he says and continues:
– I think Trier’s film has many fine qualities, but it has some weaknesses and is not a Palme d’Or Film. But I had somewhat expected that it had received any price. It has consistently gotten pretty good reviews.
