John Carew: – Long way up to Vinnie Jones – NRK

Several footballers have taken the step from the grass lawn to the big screen, but few have had as much success as the former Wimbledon player.

John Carew plays gangster in the new Norwegian film “Chiefs,” but is currently unsure if he will be movie villain full time.

– It’s a long way up to Vinnie Jones, but it is not ambition. To try me as an actor has been something I’ve been interested in long and now I have tried it, says Carew before preview of the film.

– Not easy to be naughty

Carew, who has also worked as a model for retiring football shoes on the shelf for a couple of years ago, does not rule out more film roles.

– Currently, given a taste for more, so it may be it is something I will work on. We’ll see how things unfold ahead and the opportunities I get. I’m excited about the response from the public.

The film is about Morten, played by Anderz Eide, who after a few years in prison finds out that her brother is dying in the hospital. The hunt for those responsible leads him to the Albanian mafia and gangster boss Igor, played by John Carew.

– I play a very vicious, cynical and brutal gangster. It has certainly not been easy to play villain and being so naughty. I’m really a pretty kind guy.

Want more gangster movies

The film’s director, Irasj Asanti, believes Carew makes a good figure in the film.

– After creating half the movie I asked him to join. Having seen little, he accepted. He is very capable, says the director who also plays in the film.

Asanti made the film without support from the Norwegian Film Institute. He believes it created too few films about the criminal environment in Norway.

It’s a bit unusual to make that kind of movies here at least compared to our neighboring countries and the United States. We do not dare to make that kind of films in Norway. I think these kinds of films should receive more government support. We can not just think artistically, but also on what the audience wants.
