Photographer accuses Taylor Swift to be hypocritical – Dagbladet.no

(Dagbladet): In an open letter went the American artist Taylor Swift out against Apple’s new streaming service, Apple Music, who would not pay artists under the service’s free trial period of three months.

Senior Vice President of Apple, Eddy Cue, tweeted back that Swifts prayer had been heard, and that Apple still will pay artists for every song being played.

Restrictive contract

But not all shelves Swift to be artists heroine – more specifically photographers her.

In an open letter on his blog has namely photographer Jason Sheldon, who previously worked for Swift, added by the contract he had to sign before he could take pictures during one of Swifts concerts.

contract gives Swifts management permission to reuse images free, and prohibits Sheldon – and other photographers who have signed the contract – to use the images again ever.

– Stop being mean

– I can not use pictures in my portfolio, publish them on my website, and not even the newspaper that published the first ever use them again , writes Sheldon.

Sheldon asks how Swift is different from Apple, and points out that she can afford to pay for PR their material and should allow them to use the image in other contexts.

– Photographers are not asking to get your music for free. Please do not ask us to give you free shots. We also need something to live on, he continues.

– It’s time to stop being “Mean”

Dismissing the charge

For Business Insider wrote a British representative for Swift, via an email, the photographer has misunderstood the content.

– With management’s approval photographers can use the pictures on. The contract takes neither copyright away from the photographer, writes representative.

– All artists have the right and should protect consumption of their name and work, continue the mail.

Will abolish foto contracts

Head of Press Photographers Club, Sveinung Ystad, call contracts that Swift has used is “a nuisance.”

– This is something we are working very hard to eliminate in Norway. Contracts like this adds powerful constraints on journalism, he said.

Reporting Director for visual department in Dagbladet, Frank Karlsen, endorses Ystad, calling it unacceptable. He explains that it puts restriction on the photographer’s job.

– We need to be able to manage your photos so we will, he said.

– If it appears, you should also refrain report. Text and images are intertwined.

Norwegian Press Association, Norwegian Union of Journalists, Association of Norwegian Editors, Press Photographers, Media Businesses’ Association, National Team for Local newspapers and The Norwegian Press Association came in June with a joint statement where they ask konsertrarrangører and record company to respect the press needs to cover concerts, and that photographers should not sign contracts that impose limitations.
