BBC veteran Terry Wogan is dead – NRK

According to a statement from the Wogan family died the famous broadcaster Sunday after “a brief but brave battle with cancer,” reports the BBC.

The Irish broadcaster and journalist became an institution in the UK through its 50 year radio and TV career. BBC boss Tony Hall calls Wogan “a national treasure.”

Wogan was first known radio program “Wake Up To Wogan” on BBC, which he led for several decades. The program was long the most popular on British radio.

On the screen, he led the game shows, talk shows and fund-raising campaigns, but was perhaps best known for its sour and tørrvittige commenting on Eurovision Song Contest through more decades.

Wogan compatriot Graham Norton, who succeeded him as Eurovision commentator in 2009, writes on Twitter that Wogan showed him that it was possible for a young, Irish boy to succeed.

Prime Minister David Cameron said in a statement that “Britain has lost an enormous talent, some millions felt was their own special friend.”

Wogan was knighted in 2005. He is survived by wife and three adult children.
