“The Revenant” was top scorer when Oscar nominations were announced in Los Angeles Thursday, while the post-apocalyptic action movie “Mad Max: Fury Road” follows close behind with ten nominations. Both are nominated for best film.
DiCaprio has already landed a Golden Globe Best Actor for his efforts in “The Revenant” and he is considered the favorite to go to the top in the same Oscar category. Norwegian Kristoffer Joner also has a small role in the film, which premieres in Norwegian cinemas on January 22.
Danish cheers
In Denmark it was jubilation when it became known Joshua Oppenheimer “The Look of Silence” – the sequel to the award winning “the act of killing” from 2012 – is nominated for best documentary.
Both films about the genocide in Indonesia in the 1960s, and Norwegian Piraya Film is among the four Medpro soft seats as the Danish main producer Final Cut For Real brought in.
The Danes can also hijack the award for best non-English language film, where Tobias Lind Holms “War” – with Danish Pilou Asbæk and Swedish Tuva Novotny roles – is nominated.
Vikander nominated
Swedes can rejoice Alicia Vika Thunders nomination in the Best Supporting Actress for “The Danish Girl.” The last time a Swedish actress received an Oscar nomination, was Lena Olin in 1990.
Vika Thunders opponent, the English Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne, is also nominated in the category Best Actor for the same film. The film with the original title “The Danish Girl” directed by Paco Delgado and about the Danish artist Lili Elbe who in 1930 became one of the first people in the world who underwent gender corrective surgery.
Two years on row?
Critically acclaimed “The Revenant” is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, who last year won the Oscar including for best film and director with “Birdman”. Also this year may González win the most coveted Oscar award, whose “The Revenant” beats out “Mad Max: Fury Road,” directed by George Miller.
“The Revenant” is inspired by a true event and is about the American hunter Hugh Glass’ incredible survival after being bitten by a bear in the snowy wilds of Montana and South Dakota. The film was earlier in January the big winner at the Golden Globes, where it took first prize in the category of best drama film, director and thus best leading actor.
Missing Oscar
Leonardo DiCaprio has for almost two decades been among Hollywood’s most sought after and acclaimed actors. He has yet to win an individual Oscar statuette, but this year’s nomination is the sixth in the series.
The competition is relatively hard in the fight for the award for Best Actor: Among others, Matt Damon has been nominated for stake in “The Martian” – where Norwegian Aksel Hennie plays astronaut Alex Vogt.
