These are celebrities who have come forward with HIV – TV 2

This week revealed Hollywood star Charlie Sheen (50) that he is HIV-positive. In a live interview on American television confirmed actor rumors that have been swirling in Hollywood in the recent past.

FACTS: HIV and AIDS

  • HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that may eventually develop into AIDS.
  • HIV causes weakening of the immune system so the body is more susceptible to infections and disease.
  • There is no cure for HIV infection, but with effective treatment, most people with HIV live a long life with reduced risk of serious disease complications.
  • AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is diagnosed as used with advanced HIV infection with complications.
  • HIV is found in body fluids of those infected, and the virus can infect through body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal secretions and breast milk. Sexual contact is the predominant mode of transmission.
  • In 2014 was diagnosed 5,622 HIV-positive in Norway. 3,803 of these were men and 1,819 were women.
  • In 2013 there were about 35 million people worldwide living with HIV infection.

Sheen said he has known he is HIV-positive for four years, and he insisted that he has managed to fight the disease.

The feedback has been mixed after the disclosure. He actor-father Martin Sheen (75) says he has supported her son all the way and that he is very proud of his courage, according to Fox News.

Jenny McCarthy, who played his girlfriend in “Two and a Half Men,” has however not as good word to say about Sheen. She believes that Sheen should have been open about the disease much earlier, writes People.

Sheen is not the only celebrity to have been diagnosed with HIV. Several major celebrities have been open about their diagnosis.

Rock Hudsons transparency amounted to a difference

The American actor Rock Hudson was the first major celebrity who stood openly in the press and told of their AIDS diagnosis. In 1985 it was confirmed that he was affected by the disease, and the same year he died, at the age of 59 years.

The fact that Hudson chose to come forward with his AIDS diagnosis meant that more money was donated to medical research on the disease. The activists who worked to avstigmatisere group with HIV and AIDS, held that Hudson’s openness made a big difference.

Only weeks before he died, wrote Hollywood actor a personal telegram to a fundraiser for AIDS, where he pointed out that he was pleased to make a difference.

– I’m not happy that I’m sick. I’m not happy that I have AIDS. But if it can help others, at least I know that my own misfortune has had an impact, wrote Hudson, according to the NY Times.

Freddie Mercury would hold the private

Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury died in 1991, at the age of 45 years. The cause of death was pneumonia, as a result of AIDS.

The British press had for years speculated that Mercury had HIV. The singer denied this right up until the day before his death.

23. November he told in a press release that he had tested positive for HIV and that he had AIDS.

– I wanted to keep this information private, so I could protect the privacy of those around me. But now is the time for my friends and fans will know the truth, and I hope everyone will join me in the fight against this terrible disease, wrote Mercury, according to The Guardian.

Anthony Perkins kept it a secret

The American actor Anthony Perkins is perhaps best known for his role as Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock’s film series “Psycho.”

During the filming of the third movie, he was diagnosed HIV-positive. In 1992 he died at his home in Los Angeles, at the age of 60 years. The cause of death was pneumonia, as a result of AIDS.

The actor kept the disease secret for two years, and only his kins knew about the diagnosis, according to the NY Times.

Magic Johnson will fight the disease

In 1991 revealed basketball player Earvin “Magic” Johnson (56) that he had HIV. He told a news conference that he ended his sporting career because of a positive HIV test. At the same time he declared that he would dedicate his life to fight the disease.

He created his own foundation to help fight HIV, and he has collaborated with both the US Congress and the United Nations.

Johnson is now on medication so that he prevents the HIV virus from developing into AIDS.
