(Dagbladet): You may have been directed at a particularly pedantic acquaintance or spell checker on the computer when you have used this word:

On Norwegian has namely word “compliment” masculine form, the name is “a compliment,” not “a compliment” that many still use.

It is perhaps not so surprising that the popular use of the word has often been in neuter form, since the vast majority of words ending in -ment on Norwegian today written as precisely neuter: Subscription, department, event. And so on.

It has Språkrådet taken to heart, and on Thursday the Council adopted at its meeting that also neuter form now must be correct spelling and be included in the so-called written worm.

– We are doing long-term observation language, and have seen that this word is used very much in the neuter form. Until now, only the masculine form stood in written worm, but we believe it is a sensible and good adaptation to allow neuter form, says Council Director Åse WETA.

She emphasizes that the Council did not meddle in what is correct by oral use, but only controls over standards of proper Norwegian written language.
